Spring is Coming
Or maybe it’s here already? Despite one of the coldest February’s on record, the past few weeks in Edmonton have been getting better, and better. Now with the snow melting and birds singing, it feels like the last hump of winter is finally over with (although it may still snow – who knows in this area!), but I think by far and large, the warm weather is upon us.
But really, I wanted to take a quick moment to say a big thank you to everybody who has ordered seeds so far this year. This little seed bank was featured in the Edmonton Journal on March 15th, and I’m so thrilled so many of you found your way here and decided to help fund the bank by ordering seeds.
All orders placed between March 15th-March 18th are officially out, and those of you within Alberta who ordered should be receiving those seeds within the next 2-3 days.
I’m already out of stock on a few varieties, so if you’re eyeballing anything in particular I recommend grabbing them now before they’re gone, as I won’t be growing the varieties from 2018 likely for another 5-7 years.
I’ll be finalizing the list of what is being grown out this year, and throwing that up on the website (along with the seed bank database) by early next week. I’ve decided to let the soil rest a bit this year, so I won’t be going quite as hard with the tomatoes as I normally do, but I will be growing lots of other edible varieties to take their place.
I also have plans to experiment this year with natural dye plants, so a portion of garden space will be dedicated to that as well. It’s a bit of a turn from what the seed bank normally does, but if all is successful, I hope to offer a few of those seeds as well at the end of the season.
Until then my fellow seed savers – let’s get those seeds started!
